For the Bribri, cocoa, known as Tsuru in their language, is more than just a plant—it represents the soul and spirit of the woman chosen as a companion by the god Sibö. With the purpose of nourishing their sons and daughters, Sibö materialized this divine gift into a plant that yields the sacred elixir of chocolate.

This ancestral and sacred beverage takes center stage in the Bribri's key rituals and ceremonies. Cocoa not only appears in the creation myths of the world but also in traditional rites of passage such as births, deaths, initiations, and marriages. It is a tangible bond with their heritage and a way to honor their ancestors.

Over time, cocoa has evolved in harmony with the sociocultural context of the society it inhabits. Its enduring presence in the history and mythology of Talamanca, the region where the Bribri people reside, reveals its lasting importance and its ability to adapt to change.

This article explores the social and historical process of cocoa cultivation in the indigenous communities of Talamanca, from the pre-Hispanic era to the present day. They are divided into segments called socio-historical models, representing different periods characterized by specific social practices.

In total, we identify four models: the traditional-traditional model, spanning from the pre-Hispanic period to 1908; the enclave model, from 1909 to 1940; the recovery model, from 1941 to 1979; and the transition model, from 1980 to 2006. Each of these models is constructed based on fundamental aspects such as productive practices, social relations, work organization, and the relationship with the environment and the symbolic.
